Thanks to advanced methods and technologies, it is now possible to effectively combat hair loss in men and women with a hair transplant. However, many sufferers are unaware that there is an effective alternative treatment option to conventional hair transplants that can be used to visually fill in balding and thinning areas.

This method refers to hair pigmentation, which can also be used even if a hair transplant is no longer feasible.

What is hair pigmentation?

Hair pigmentation, also known as micro hair, micro hair pigmentation or scalp pigmentation, involves injecting special colour pigments into the second skin layer of the scalp using fine needles. This is done to visually conceal bald areas or thinning hair and create a thicker hair look.

Choosing the right technique is very important for first-class hair pigmentation results.

At our hair centre, we only use certified hypoallergenic pigments that are free from nickel and other harmful substances.

Possible applications of hair pigmentation

Hair pigmentation can be used in various initial situations of hair loss and is also a treatment option if a hair transplant is no longer feasible due to insufficient donor hair.

  • Hair pigmentation makes it possible to visually conceal bald areas, such as receding hairline or receding hairline.
  • It helps to make thinning areas of hair appear fuller and thicker again. With the help of colour pigments, scars in the head area can also be adjusted so that they blend harmoniously into the surrounding skin colour.
  • In the case of a tonsure or full baldness, scalp pigmentation can be used to create the impression of a modern short hairstyle with a length of 0.5 mm.

Hair colouring is possible for both short and long hair, and it is not necessary to shave the hair in the treated area beforehand.

Combination options with other hair treatments

Depending on the stage of hair loss you are at, hair pigmentation can also be carried out in combination with other hair treatments to achieve the best possible treatment results.

In the initial phase of hair loss, it is advisable to combine hair preservation methods such as mesotherapy or PRP therapy. This can visually thicken the thinning hair and at the same time strengthen the remaining hair on the head.

If the hair loss is already more advanced, pigmentation of the scalp can be used as a complementary measure to a hair transplant to further intensify the aesthetic result.

How hair pigmentation works

Before we start with hair pigmentation at our hair centre in Wiesbaden, we first hold a comprehensive consultation. On request, we also offer a hair analysis to analyse the causes of your hair loss in more detail. We will then inform you about the options for hair pigmentation, the procedure and the expected result and, of course, clarify the costs of the treatment.

If you decide in favour of scalp pigmentation, we will schedule the first session. On this day, your scalp pigmentation specialist will first prepare the treatment area, work with you to select the right colour for your personal situation and test it on an inconspicuous area. The application of the colour pigments can then begin.

After your visit to our hair centre, you will be able to return to your normal everyday life immediately. A total of four treatments are usually required to achieve the best possible result.

Frequently asked questions about hair pigmentation

The duration depends on the size of the areas to be treated and can vary between 1.5 and 2 hours. To achieve the best possible result, approximately 4 sessions are necessary, which should take place at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks.

The result usually lasts for up to 5 years. However, unlike a tattoo, hair pigmentation begins to fade over time and requires refreshing. This effect is intentional, as it allows the pigmentation to be adapted to the individual needs of the patient, for example in the event of age-related changes in hair colour, increasing hair loss or changes in hairstyle.

Hair pigmentation is therefore not the same as a tattoo, which remains permanently in the skin and is considerably more painful to apply as the colour pigments penetrate deeper into the skin.

Immediately after micro hair pigmentation, you can look forward to the first results. However, the scalp will initially be slightly reddened. In addition, the pigmentation will fade slightly after a few days as soon as the uppermost skin flakes have loosened. You can admire the final result of the treatment around four weeks after the last session.

Micro hair pigmentation is a safe procedure thanks to the use of high-quality colour pigments that are applied by experienced doctors. After application, redness and skin irritation may occur in the treated area for a short time, but these usually subside quickly. A slight scab may also form, which you should not scrape off. The scabs fall off by themselves after a certain time and leave no scars.

As a rule, our patients only feel a mild stinging sensation during hair pigmentation, which usually subsides as the session progresses. On request, we are able to apply an anaesthetic ointment to the area to be treated before the treatment.

Scalp pigmentation does not require any complicated pre- or post-treatment. As it is advisable not to wash your hair for 48 hours after the colour pigments have been applied, it makes sense to wash your hair beforehand.

After your micro hair pigmentation appointment, it is advisable to protect the treated areas from direct sunlight for a period of two days and to refrain from wearing headgear. You should also avoid activities such as swimming, going to the sauna and intensive physical activity during this phase and refrain from applying cream or oil to the pigmented areas. For the time after the treatment, we recommend special care products that promote the healing process.
